The Cape Town service experience has a rich history that began in 2009, when Global LEAD was introduced to Ms. Cheryl, a soup mother and resident of Sir Lowry’s Pass Township. From the beginning, our relationship with the people of the community has allowed students to participate in empowering afterschool programs in arts, sports, music and dance. In addition, we work with the local primary school to host a field day and create tangible projects that leave a lasting impact on the community.
Finally, the most compelling aspect of the service experience is the time spent in small groups with your community family sharing stories and learning about each others’ lives. It is during these unique opportunities that you will understand their way of life, values and culture, while simultaneously discovering your own strengths and passions.
The lasting impact of this experience is often found in those indescribable moments. Whether that moment is a simple smile from a little girl who believes you to be her “best friend in the world” or a conversation with a high school student who dreams of a better life, you will never be the same. No matter the moment, it’s important to know that you are a chapter in an ongoing legacy, one that continues to be written long after you return home.
