Service

Those who have never traveled to Greece often wonder about the service opportunities available in a sophisticated country renowned for its history, culture and relaxing beaches. Though Greece is in fact a perfect vacation destination for all of those reasons, Global LEAD experiences purposefully challenge you by exposing you to powerful service opportunities that others may overlook.

During our service week, Global LEAD students will venture into the inner-city streets of Athens to explore one of the most pivotal current world challenges – immigration and refugees. Forced to leave their native countries due to war, famine or political hardship, these families are lost and without a home. Working hand-in-hand with local non-governmental organizations, you participate in several projects ranging from quality of life empowerment programs to beautification projects such as painting a community center.

Each year we encounter stories that resonate with the group, leaving a lasting impression on the lives of our students. During Greece 2010, students were touched by the story of Abdul, who had fled Sudan and travelled thousands of miles to reach the shores of Greece and find that he was not welcome. His gripping story of sorrow and fear for his family in Sudan forced each student to wonder how they would fair in the same situation. Through powerful experiences such as this, you realize there is nothing too small to give these people – a smile to a young Somali child or a warm embrace with an Afghan mother are gentle reminders that hope for a better life remains possible.
