What courses are offered?
The courses will be 3000 level Leadership and Service Learning courses (3 hours each). We will not have exact course numbers until closer to registration since these are brand new classes that the University of Georgia is creating specifically for Global LEAD. These classes are built around the Global LEAD Programs that will be accepted at other institutions as well. Click here to read more.
How do I register for a LEAD Trip?
To register for a LEAD Trip, students will need to create a LEAD Account. For all the details on how to create an account and the registration procedure please click here.
What types of scholarships are available?
The Global L.E.A.D. Program strongly believes that the international experience should be made available to as many qualified students as possible. Students can use their state or federal financial aid, including the HOPE Scholarship for our program as well as other scholarships. Students can get a listing of several scholarships available at: http://www.uga.edu/oie/sa_scholarship.htm
Can I book my own flight or do I have to use the group flight?
Students are welcomed to book their own flight; however, Global LEAD is not responsible for arranging ground transportation to the lodging. In addition, if students arrive before the start date a fee will be incurred for the additional night of lodging. Please register your flight online so that the Program Director will know when to accept you in country.
I am out of state; do I get to pay in-state tuition?
Yes. Students who are out of state will be charged in-state tuition for the program. Remember—for all students—tuition is NOT included in the program cost.
Can we have visitors during the program?
No. Students are not allowed to have any non-program participants stay with them during any portion of the trip.
Can we stay in a country longer or arrive early?
Students are welcomed to make their own travel and housing arrangements before or after the official program. Global LEAD, however, does not take any responsibility for students outside the program dates. Students can extend their medical coverage for an additional cost if they choose to be in the country longer than the official program.
Can I room with my friends?
Everyone will have the opportunity to request one other individual that they would like to room with. Global LEAD will work hard to try and accommodate everyone’s request; however, there are no guarantees.
Who is going with me?
First year programs will have an average of 50 students from schools across the Southeast. Each program will have Global LEAD staff members, University of Georgia staff members and TAs as well as guest speakers who join the program for portions of the trip.
Do we need visas?
Global LEAD participants can travel on a tourist visa for all programs. US passport holder information can be found below; however if you are holding a foreign passport there will be different requirements. Each participant is responsible for obtaining the necessary visa for their program. The Global LEAD staff is available to assist you if you have any questions or problems, but it is the primary responsibility of each student to obtain the visa necessary for their program.
South Africa:
For US passport holders it is not necessary to apply for a visa before entering South Africa as a tourist for up to 90 days. Visas are free upon entry, and can be redeemed at the airport during immigration. If you are holding a foreign passport please Click HERE to see if you need a visa for entry.
However, we recommend the passports of all travelers to South Africa contain at least two completely blank (unstamped) pages each time entry is sought. These pages are in addition to the endorsement/amendment pages (as many as four) at the back of the passport.
While South African statutes require one, completely blank visa page, this rule has been applied inconsistently by South African immigration officials. In addition, any trip to a neighboring country would necessitate another blank page upon return. Travelers lacking adequate blank pages in the passport may be refused entry into South Africa, fined, and returned to their point of origin at the traveler’s expense. South African authorities have denied the diplomatic missions access to assist in these cases. As a general precaution, all travelers are advised to carry a photocopy of the photo/bio information page of their passport and keep it in a location separate from the passport.
Visit the Embassy of South Africa website for the most current visa information.
Brazil:
A passport and visa are required for U.S. citizens traveling to Brazil for any purpose. Brazilian visas must be obtained in advance from the Brazilian Embassy or consulate nearest to the traveler’s place of residence.
Students should apply for the Temporary Visa: VITEM-I
There are no “airport visas” and immigration authorities will refuse entry to Brazil to anyone not possessing a valid visa. All Brazilian visas, regardless of the length of validity, must initially be used within 90 days of the issuance date or will no longer be valid. Americans reentering Brazil must be able to show an entry stamp in their passport proving that the visa was issued within 90 days; otherwise they will not be allowed reentry. Immigration authorities will not allow entry into Brazil without a valid visa. The U.S. Government cannot assist travelers who arrive in Brazil without proper documentation.
Additionally, travelers who have recently visited certain countries, including most other Latin American countries (check Brazilian Embassy website linked below), may be required to present an inoculation card indicating they had a yellow fever inoculation or they may not be allowed to board the plane or enter the country.
Visit the web site of the Brazilian Embassy in Washington, D.C. for the most current visa information.
For current entry and customs requirements for Brazil, travelers may contact the Brazilian Embassy at 3009 Whitehaven Street NW, Washington, DC 20008; telephone 1-202-238-2828. Travelers may also contact the Brazilian consulates in Boston, Houston, Miami, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, or San Francisco. Addresses, phone numbers, web and e-mail addresses, and jurisdictions of these consulates may be found at the Brazilian Embassy web site.
Greece:
For US passport holders it is not necessary to apply for a visa before entering Greece as a tourist for up to 90 days.
