Roman philosopher Seneca famously said, “Travel and change of place impart new vigor to the mind.”
The Global LEAD team strongly believes that international experiences should be made available to as many qualified students as possible. Therefore, we will provide numerous scholarships to students on our programs. Scholarships range from $500 – $6000. We encourage every student to apply!
In addition, there are a wide variety of scholarships available through national organizations as well as your university.

Scholarship Application Directions:
1. You can apply only after you have submitted your Global LEAD Online Application and deposit.
2. Every scholarship applicant must answer the three LEAD Scholarship questions (150 words maximum per question).
3. If you are applying for the Toma Family or Foundation Fellow Scholarship, please complete the additional required sections (200 word maximum for question 1). If you are only applying for the LEAD Scholarship, then please leave the additional sections blank.
4. Please review your answers. After you click submit, you can no longer make any changes to your application.

LEAD Scholarship

We are seeking to honor ten LEAD Scholars based on our company’s ideals of leadership, education, adventure and diplomacy. Our organization’s story began with a 100-day trip from Kenya to Cape Town, where we learned about ourselves, each other and the world while speaking at leadership conferences in Nairobi, learning from locals in Rwanda, rafting the Nile River in Uganda and serving in the townships of Cape Town, South Africa. We know the power of LEAD and we want students who will embrace and share our vision. We believe this holistic approach to study abroad and life is necessary to achieve success and fulfillment in life.
Qualifications include: LEAD Scholars are those who believe values, passion and service are not only driving factors of success but the very foundation for life. All students with a 2.5 GPA and significant leadership and service experience are eligible and encouraged to apply.

Greece or Ecuador Scholarship

We are seeking to honor 6 individuals (3 for each location) that specifically want to explore leadership and service in Ecuador or Greece. We are looking for motivated, involved and innovative students that are passionate about going abroad and expanding their comfort zone.
Qualifications include: These applicants should demonstrate leadership and service at home and on campus and apply for LEAD Greece or LEAD Ecuador. All students with a 2.5 GPA and significant leadership and service experience are eligible and encouraged to apply.

Bring A Friend Scholarship

Toma Family Scholarship

We are seeking to honor one student with the Toma Family Scholarship. From our humble beginning in 2009, Doug Toma believed in our mission. Committed to helping us achieve our goals, Doug quickly became more than a partner and colleague; he was our friend. His tireless support of Global LEAD and passion to promote servant leadership values in future generations made Doug instrumental in creating the University of Georgia sponsored curriculum. Through his dedicated efforts, the Leadership and Service Learning courses were born. Sadly, Doug passed away earlier this year after bravely fighting cancer. His contributions to his family, friends and the world will never be forgotten. 
Qualifications include: Doug Toma believed potential is not always best communicated through a piece of paper; instead, the future impact of a person lies within their spirit, passion and charisma. All students with a 2.5 GPA who believe that they have limitless potential to impact the world and are able to demonstrate financial need are eligible and encouraged to apply.

Qualifications include: The Global LEAD experience is unique in a multitude of ways, one of which is the geographic diversity of experience our students bring to the program. We value this diversity and are committed to promoting Global LEAD to a wider audience; any Global LEAD applicant is eligible to be a Foundation Fellow if you attend any 4-year university that has been underrepresented on previous Global LEAD Experiences. You are eligible to apply as long as your home university is NOT on the following list:

By accepting this $2,000 scholarship, each Foundation Fellow Scholarship Recipient agrees to represent Global LEAD on his/her campus as a Campus Ambassador after they return home. This position includes: working with study abroad office and registrar’s office to establish course equivalencies and program approvals, assisting with recruitment and marketing for Summer programs and finding new ways to publicize Global LEAD on your campus.

Name: Michael F. and Mary E. Adams Study Abroad Scholarship Fund

Description: These scholarship funds are supported by the Michael F. and Mary E. Adams Study Abroad Scholarship Fund, which was established at the 10th year anniversary at UGA, as well as Arch Foundation Funds.
Eligibility: 3.0 minimum GPA required, demonstrated financial need, and must not have previously studied abroad for academic credit at the university level.

Name: Truman Scholars
Amount: Up to $30,00

Description: The Truman Scholarship provides up to $30,000 in funding to students pursuing graduate degrees in public service fields. Students must be college juniors at the time of selection and must be nominated by their undergraduate institution. The Fac Rep Locator will help you to find the representative at your school and provide guidance if there is not a current representative at your school.
Eligibility: Must be a full-time student pursuing a bachelor’s degree with junior-level academic standing and must be a U.S. citizen.
Requirements: The Truman Application consists of an Institutional Nomination form and letter, three additional letters of recommendation, a recent transcript, a 14 question application and a policy proposal.
Name: Boren Awards for International Study

Description: Boren Scholarships and Fellowships provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to add an important international and language component to their educations. They focus on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study that are critical to U.S. national security and underrepresented in study abroad.
Eligibility: Must be a U.S. citizen at the time of application. Must have matriculated in an undergraduate degree program located within the United States accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Must be applying to a study abroad program that meets home institution standards in a country outside of Western Europe, Canada, Australia or New Zealand.
Requirements: Must be nominated by a Boren campus representative. Must submit the Boren Scholarship application and submit two letters of reference, official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended, language self-assessment and one page study abroad program description.
Name: Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society Study Abroad Grants
Amount: $1,000 grants

Description: Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grants are designed to help support undergraduates as they seek knowledge and experience in their academic fields by studying abroad. Forty-five $1,000 grants are awarded each year.
Eligibility: The competition is open to Phi Kappa Phi members and non-members in all fields of study. You must have earned at least 30 semester-hours and no more than 90 semester-hours of academic credit as of April 1, 2013. You must have a GPA of at least a 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. You must have at least two semesters remaining in residence at your home institution after completing the study abroad experience.
Requirements: Must complete application including short answers and personal statement. Must also submit two letters of recommendation.

Description: In an effort to make it easier for more students to study abroad, AmeriSpan will award more than $100,000 in scholarships to university and college study abroad departments. Your college will determine which of your students are eligible to receive these scholarships.

Name: Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship
Amount: up to $5,000

Number of Recipients: Approximately 1 in 3 Gilman Scholarship applicants are selected to receive the scholarship
Description: The Gilman Scholarship Program offers awards for undergraduate study abroad and was established by the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000. This scholarship provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide.
Eligibility: The Gilman Scholarship Program is open to U.S. citizen undergraduate students who are planning to study abroad. The program aims to diversify the kinds of students who study abroad and the countries and regions where they go by supporting undergraduates who might otherwise not participate due to financial constraints.
Requirements: The Gilman Scholarship Program has an online application.
Name: Barry A. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program
Amount: Up to $7,500 annually

Description: The purpose of the Foundation is to provide a continuing source of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians and engineers by awarding scholarships to college students who intend to pursue careers in these fields.
Eligibility: College juniors and those who will be college seniors with outstanding potential and intend to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences or engineering.

Name: Rotary International Ambassador Scholarships
Amount: Scholarship provides a flat grant amount of US $27,000 that is meant to defray the costs to pursue study at the assigned study institution

Number of Recipients: Nearly 700 each year
Description: The purpose of the Ambassadorial Scholarships program is to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries and geographical areas. The program sponsors academic year scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students as well as for qualified professionals pursuing vocational studies. While abroad, scholars serve as goodwill ambassadors to the host country and give presentations about their homelands to Rotary clubs and other groups. Upon returning home, scholars share with Rotarians and others the experiences that led to a greater understanding of their host country.
Eligibility: Persons in the following categories are ineligible: (a) a Rotarian or Honorary Rotarian; (b) an employee of a Rotary club or district, of Rotary International, or of another Rotary-affiliated entity; (c) a spouse, a lineal descendant (child or grandchild by blood or adopted or not adopted), a spouse of a lineal descendant, or an ancestor (parent or grandparent by blood) of any living person in categories (a) or (b); and that Rotarians and their relatives as described above remain ineligible for 36 months after resignation.
Requirements: Must apply for Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships through their local Rotary club. Must submit three essays, recommendation forms and transcripts.
Name: Elizabeth Suzanne Schaefer Scholarship

Description: Preference given for academic merit, applicants from under-represented student groups in Education Abroad (i.e. students of color, first generation college students, students from rural Georgia, math/science majors, etc.), participation in programs with language/cultural immersion component or located in an under- represented geographic region (i.e. ideally outside of Western Europe). All students are encouraged to apply.
Eligibility: Only for UGA undergraduates attending external or UGA-sponsored study abroad or exchange program. 3.0 minimum GPA required

Education Abroad Scholarships come through support of the Murphy family to the Katherine John Murphy Fund, as well as supported by UGA Foundation Funds. Eligibility: UGA undergraduates attending a UGA sponsored Education Abroad or Exchange program. 3.30 minimum GPA required, demonstrated financial need, and must not have previously studied abroad for academic credit at the university level.

Description: HISP awards are merit-based, taking into account GPA, quality of essays, and fit of the program to the student’s academic and professional goals.
Eligibility: Second- and third-year UGA Honors students with a minimum grade point average of 3.5 or higher.
Requirements: Application and essay explaining your proposed travel-study or internship plans. Also submit a current resumé, including activities and honors.
Name: Lagrant Undergraduate Scholarship
Amount: $5,000 Scholarship

Description: The LAGRANT Foundation annually provides 15 scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students who are attending accredited institutions and are pursuing careers in the fields of advertising, marketing or public relations.
Eligibility: African Americans, Asians, Pacific Islanders, Hispanics, American Indians, and Alaska Natives who are current college freshmen, sophomores, juniors and non-graduating seniors. Applicants must be full-time students majoring in a field of study that has an emphasis on public relations, marketing, or advertising
Requirements: Must write a one to two-page, typed essay outlining career goals and steps to increase the lack of ethnic representation in the fields of advertising, marketing and public relations. Must also submit completed application, several short answer essays, transcript and a letter of recommendation.
